Hair removal is a choice, not an obligation, the hair is part of us, and it is up to us to choose whether to keep it or take it off. However, many of us like to show off smooth and soft legs, especially when the warm weather arrives. Whether you’ve already tried it or want to get ready for your first appointment with the beautician, waxing (contrary to popular belief) isn’t all that bad. Once done, you must know how to behave to avoid some unwanted effects: redness, irritation, and ingrown hair. It’s nothing complicated, I promise! We want to give you some tips so that you can arrive at your appointment in the best possible conditions and thus enjoy your soft and smooth skin for a long time. So here are ten mistakes you shouldn’t make.
Do Not Expose Yourself To The Sun 24 Hours After Waxing
Wax booked during a beach break? Fantastic! Smooth and velvety skin for a long time = a relaxing holiday without the need to carry the razor. However, wait at least 24 hours after your appointment before going out in the sun to allow the hair follicle to close and restore. The same applies if you book a tanning session and wait 1 or 2 days to avoid the strawberry legs effect. Last tip: take a cold shower before your tanning session to even close your pores.
Don’t Tan Before Waxing
We know what you’re thinking: “No problem, I’ll book my UV-free tanning session before my waxing” well, not so fast. Waxing on skin that has just been artificially tanned will cause what is known as the zebra effect. Waxing not only removes hair but also removes the surface layer of the skin. What does it mean? That your beautiful tan will fade.
Book Waxing According To Yours Menstrual Cycle
If you have difficulty enduring the pain of waxing in the groin (we assure you that it becomes less and less painful with each session as the hair weakens), then avoid booking your appointment just before your period. The days before menstruation increase the sensitivity of the pelvic area, so try to plan your schedule, taking this into account. Minimize your risk by booking your wax at least one week before your period starts.
Avoid High Temperatures After Waxing
There is nothing better than a relaxing break in a Turkish bath or sauna to reduce stress and eliminate toxins. Unfortunately, it’s best to avoid both for at least 24 hours after waxing. The heat will only worsen the previous day’s irritation and redness. Also, enlarged pores increase the risk of infections and ingrown hairs. The same goes for hot baths: give your skin time to recover from waxing before exposing it to a heat source.
Do A Scrub To Avoid Ingrown Hairs
The scrub is the perfect solution to eliminate any risk of ingrown hair. Of course, this doesn’t mean you need to scrub right away! Wait two or three days for the skin to recover from waxing, then proceed gently. Opt for a specific scrub, exfoliating salt or brown sugar, 100% natural!
Do Not Short The Hair Before Waxing
If this is your first waxing, or if you haven’t done it in a long time, it’s understandable the temptation to shave. Do you think the hair is long enough to upset your beautician? She doesn’t care how many inches you have or how long they are. If you shave, you risk the hairs being too short of removal. If your hair is too long, know that the beautician will shorten it a bit to make waxing less painful, but she remembers: it’s always better to have hair too long than too short.
No Sea Immediately After Waxing
Well, now you are all shaved and ready to go to the beach! One caveat: the sea (or the pool) and sunscreen can irritate the hair follicle. Then wait 24 hours to avoid the risk of infection.
No Alcohol Before Waxing
a glass (or two) of wine may seem like a great idea while we wait for our date. However, alcohol and caffeine can make the skin more sensitive. So no coffee, vermouth, or Red Bull before waxing
Stop Exercising After Waxing
Can’t you do without the gym? Well, we admire you! There is nothing quite like exercise (and healthy eating) to keep you fit. Only in this case, it is good to take a little break after waxing. Going to the gym right after waxing may not be a good idea for several reasons: First, wearing tight clothing could cause too much friction with the skin and increase the risk of redness and ingrown hair. Secondly, heat and sweat are best friends with an infection. Wait at least a day to allow your skin to recover.
